Caravan Site Review: Fields End Water, Waterside

Caravan Site Review: Fields End Water, Waterside

No trip to a caravan site feels complete without trying out every pitch, right? So, for what must have been our third (or maybe fourth?) visit to Fields End Water in Doddington—a lovely Tranquil Parks site—we decided to stay at Waterside this time.

The Waterside pitches are set in a charming figure-of-eight layout around the lake and facilities, making it such a peaceful spot. This was a last-minute getaway for us, timed perfectly over Bonfire Night to help our much-loved Spanish Water Dog, Ora, feel a bit more at ease. She’s nearly fourteen and a half now, and loud bangs aren’t exactly her thing these days.

Have you been to Fields End Water before? Or maybe you’ve found another great spot to escape the fireworks with your furry friends? We’d love to hear about your experiences! It’s always nice to share tips and stories with fellow travellers.

Arrival

Getting into Waterside is super easy with their automated barrier system—you’ll get a code for your stay, so no need to worry! If you’ve got a wider caravan like ours (8 feet across), the barrier might feel a little snug, but with a bit of care, it’s no trouble at all.

As we drove around to find our pitch, we couldn’t help but notice the vibe this time of year—lots of dedicated anglers out there! Rain or shine, they’re patiently waiting for that perfect catch.

Pitch

This time, we decided to park the caravan nose-in so we could enjoy that stunning lake view right from our lounge window—totally worth it! It did mean unhitching and using our motor movers to get everything lined up just right, but with the generous space on the pitch, it was a breeze.

One of the great things about Waterside is that every pitch is fully serviced—running water, grey waste, and electric hook-up are all sorted for you.

Facilities

After parking up the van, we wandered over to the caravan site café—it was the last day of the season, so we couldn’t resist squeezing in one last cooked lunch. And wow, it didn’t disappoint! A hearty full English with locally sourced bacon, sausages, and eggs—absolutely delicious and the perfect fuel for the day.

On the way back to our caravan, we decided to check out the facilities over at Waterside (they give you a unique entry code, which is a nice touch). Honestly, we were impressed—clean, cozy, and warm, which is such a treat this time of year.

Have you been to a spot with standout facilities like this? Would love to hear about it! There’s something about finding little gems like these on a shared adventure.

Location

After getting back to our caravan, we finished setting up and soon settled in for a cosy evening overlooking the lake—such a peaceful spot! One thing we love about Waterside is how quiet the pitches are at night. The soft lighting is just enough to find your way around without taking away from the gorgeous night sky. Perfect for stargazing!

This trip was full of wildlife sightings, probably because it's a quieter time of year. We took so many beautiful walks around the other lakes and through the woodlands—it felt like our own little slice of nature. We originally planned to stay for three nights, but it was so calm and relaxing here that we extended to 10 nights!

At one point, we had to move to the pitch next door because someone else was scheduled to arrive at ours (though they didn’t end up showing). Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal—thanks to motor movers, it only took us about 20 minutes to switch spots. Totally worth it to soak up more of that peaceful vibe.

During this stay we visited Ely Cathedral, RAF Lakenheath and visiited a number of other small towns and villages in the surrounding area.

Have you visited Waterside?

We’d love to hear about your favourite walks or wildlife sightings! This place feels like such a hidden gem, and we can’t wait to come back.
