Caravan Site Review: Stretton Lakes, Oakham – A Return Visit

If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s consistency!

For the first weekend in December, we wanted to see if we could squeeze in a quick getaway—just two nights, no hassle. Stretton Lakes was the perfect choice for us, thanks to how close it is and how easy it makes everything.

So, Friday morning, we packed up and hit the road, heading up the A1 to Stretton, near Oakham. It’s just over an hour away for us, making it ideal for a short and sweet two-night break.

Arrival

Getting to Stretton Lakes couldn’t be easier. You just drive in, and the ANPR system takes care of the gate—no stress. If no one’s at reception, no problem! You can head straight to your pitch and get settled.

Have you been to Stretton Lakes before? Or do you have a favourite spot for quick weekend trips? We’d love to hear your recommendations!

Pitch

Alright, confession time—it’s no secret on our TikTok channel that I had a bit of a mishap reversing onto our pitch this time. Yep, I clipped the grass. In my defence, the pitch we picked was on a bend, and the road curved the opposite way, leaving barely any tarmac to work with.

Should I have used the motor movers? Absolutely. But it was freezing, and I (mistakenly) thought I could nail it without too much trouble. Lesson learned!

Anyone else have a reversing nightmare they want to share? Let’s not leave me hanging here!

Set Up

There’s nothing quite like that first cup of coffee or tea once you’re all set up, is there? For some of you, it’s probably something a little stronger (no judgment—we all have our rituals!).

For me, that first sip marks the start of the adventure, the moment I feel like I can fully relax. This time, setup was a breeze. Having been away just a couple of weeks ago, we were in the groove, and without the awning, it was even quicker.

What’s your go-to routine once you’re all pitched up? Let’s swap tips!

Facilities

Let me just say, the facilities at Stretton Lakes are next-level. It’s part of the Tranquil Parks network, and honestly, I haven’t come across anything better yet.

Sure, there might be newer or fancier sites out there, but for me, their showers and bathrooms are hard to beat. Spotlessly clean and so well-maintained—it’s the little things that make a big difference, right?

Have you been to a park with facilities that blew you away? Drop your recommendations—I’m always on the lookout for new gems!

Location

During our quick stop here, we managed to squeeze in a visit to Hambletons Bakery for lunch—what a treat! We also wandered through a Christmas market in Oakham, which was just lovely and really got us into the festive spirit. It was the perfect way to wrap up our travels before diving into the holiday prep.

We absolutely love it here. The site is so calm and peaceful—one of the big perks of staying at an adults-only spot. Oakham and Grafham Water, just up the road, are both such gems. We’re already planning to come back!

And that’s a wrap for us in 2024. We’re so excited about the adventures 2025 will bring!

How about you? Do you have any exciting trips planned yet? Let’s inspire each other for the year ahead!
