Caravan Site Review: Pinewoods, Wells next-the-sea

After missing out on our trip to Wells Touring Park, we were thrilled to finally have our two-car back and quickly decided to plan a last-minute long weekend getaway to Pinewoods in Norfolk. I had been planning on visiting Norfolk with our caravan for quite some time, so this unexpected trip was a nice surprise.

Booking

We made our reservation directly with Pinewoods at the Spoonbill Drift Touring Park, which boasts 116 pitches for caravans and motorhomes, offering stunning views of the marshland, countryside, reserve, wide skies, and the picturesque backdrop of Wells town. Spoonbill Drift has been thoughtfully designed to have minimal impact on the landscape, both environmentally and visually, featuring wild planting and plenty of open space.

The pitches themselves consist of a three by nine-meter fibre-reinforced grass standing area with porous grid paving. Each pitch is equipped with electricity, water, and grey water waste points as standard amenities.

Arrival

I must admit, I felt a tad bit anxious about the approach to Pinewoods. As many who have driven through Wells next-the-sea know, the roads can be a bit narrow with a few tight corners. However, we managed to navigate our 42ft total length quite smoothly along Beach Road and into the reception area at the park.

The receptionist gave us a warm and friendly welcome, taking the time to explain the park's rules and layout. She even made sure to greet Ora, our beloved Spanish Water Dog, making us feel right at home.

Pitch

Our pitch was conveniently located in the centre of the park, close to all the amenities. While I did notice that the grass on our pitch was a bit worn down, it was understandable given the busy season and high occupancy of the park. Each pitch is quickly filled as soon as a caravan or motorhome departs, so it's just a sign of a popular and bustling park.

On this occasion, I decided to confidently reverse onto the pitch without using the motor mover, as there was ample space around me. It went smoothly, adding to my growing confidence in my maneuvering skills.

As mentioned earlier, each pitch comes equipped with individual EHU electrical hook-ups, a fresh water tap, and grey waste facilities. Within no time, we were all set up and ready to enjoy our stay. Opting not to put up our awning due to the windy weather and the short duration of our trip.

Amenities

The shower blocks, WC's, and Elsan waste points at this site are impeccably maintained and always kept in excellent condition. We've noticed that Adult-Only sites generally offer cleaner facilities compared to family sites, however Pinewoods was consistently spotless throughout our stay, matching most Adult-Only sites for cleanliness.

On and Off Site Facilities

The on-site shop offers high-quality goods, and each evening brings a different local food trailer for a tasty treat. During our visit, we enjoyed delicious pizza and curry from the on-site trailers. Additionally, the park is conveniently located near Wells next-the-sea's bustling high street, providing plenty of dining options for every taste. We particularly enjoyed the fish and chips by the quayside!

Nearby

Venturing beyond Wells next-the-sea opens up lots of activities and sights,  awaiting to be explored. From the charming coastal town of Cromer with its iconic pier and famous crabs, to the picturesque village of Sheringham known for its steam railway and stunning beaches, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Blakeney Point offers a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of nature with its seal colonies and birdlife, while Holkham Nature Reserve and Beach provide a serene escape into the wilderness. And of course, a visit to the Holkham Crab Shack is a must for a delicious lunch by the sea.

With so much to see and do just a short drive away, don't miss out on the chance to discover the hidden gems and treasures that Norfolk has to offer. Whether you're a nature lover, a foodie, or simply seeking relaxation, there is a wealth of experiences waiting for you to enjoy.

Will we Return?

This trip was quite an adventure for us. We were thrilled to escape and explore Wells next-the-sea and the charming surrounding villages and towns. Lisa particularly enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the larger, bustling caravan site, with all the amenities and the beach within walking distance. The weather was truly unpredictable, with sunburn one moment and seeking shelter from a storm the next, experiencing all four seasons in just four days.

Personally, I tend to prefer more peaceful sites, but Pinewoods does areally good job of catering to everyone's tastes. So, I can definitely see us returning in the future!
